Tours will resume October 4.

Getting to Shangri La

All tours of Shangri La originate and end at the Honolulu Museum of Art located at 900 S. Beretania Street between Victoria Street and Ward Avenue in Honolulu.
Visitors check in at the museum's Ward Avenue entrance for 9am tours and at the main Beretania Street entrance for all other tours. Guests are transported in a 25 passenger shuttle bus to Shangri La. All guests are required to return to the Honolulu Museum of Art at the end of their tour. There are no exceptions to how guests can visit Shangri La. 

Visitors may NOT drive or park on-site at Shangri La or in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Bag check

In order for all our visitors to have the most enjoyable experience possible, we ask you to kindly observe the following guidelines. ​

As storage is limited, please pack lightly for your visit to Shangri La.

Day tours
All backpacks, shopping bags, parcels, umbrellas, tripods, and handbags exceeding 11" x 17" x 8" must be checked at the HoMA front desk. The museum is not responsible for items held in the lockers or at the Visitor Information Center. All bags are subject to security inspection.

Evening programs and events
Storage is available to store bags at Shangri La for evening programs and events. Visitors are required to check backpacks and any items larger than 18" in diameter. All bags that are brought to Shangri La may be inspected by security staff.

Prohibited items

All bags are subject to security inspection.
• Selfie sticks
• Tripods
• Monopods
• Food, drink, chewing gum
• Aerosol cans
• Mace or pepper spray
• Sharp items such as knives or screwdrivers
• Explosives
• Firearms and other weapons
• Large umbrellas and any other objects deemed by Shangri La to be too large or a danger to exhibits and artifacts
• Smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco are not permitted onsite

The following items are PERMITTED:
• Mobility aids such as canes and walkers
• Certified service animals or animals-in-training. However, Shangri La reserves the right to designate restricted areas and/or ask that the animal be removed if safety of our visitors, staff, and collections are at risk due to animal behavior.

Photography

Photography is permitted in designated areas for private, noncommercial use only. Phones and compact still cameras with a lens no longer than three inches are allowed​. No video cameras, selfie sticks, tablets, tripods, monopods, and flash photography. Permission to publish, reproduce, exhibit or distribute images must be obtained by separate agreement.

Cell phones

We request that cell phones be silenced during the tour.

Visitor facilities

Two unisex restrooms are available on site at Shangri La. Drinking water is also available.

Attire

The climate at Shangri La is usually hot and sunny and the house is not air-conditioned. Comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing and sunglasses are recommended.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on site at Shangri La.
